Poppea

Ingun Bjørnsgaard

Opens on: 11 April at 16.00
Also performed on: 12 April at 19.00

Poppea is a much acclaimed chamber play by Ingun Bjørnsgaard – a full-length performance inspired by Monteverdi’s opera.

Poppea was a woman in ancient Rome who, against all the odds, made her way to the throne and became the wife of Emperor Nero. Monteverdi wrote an opera about her in the 17th century, and now the Norwegian choreographer Ingun Bjørnsgaard has taken on this iconic woman.

Based on the opera and Monteverdi’s original music complemented by original electronic music she is building a drama in which nothing is certain. Rules are rewritten; sexual categories clash, change places and disintegrate.

Ingun Bjørnsgaard is famous for her way of telling a story and at the same time working with abstraction. Through this performance, which features five or the most celebrated dancers in Norway, she is searching for beauty in that which is flawed.

About Ingun Bjørnsgaard:
Ingun Bjørnsgaard is one of the most important choreographers in Norway today. She works in an area somewhere in between classical ballet and contemporary dance. Many of her works are based on strong historical women without adhering to a predetermined interpretation of them. The characters tend to break loose from the story and dance away in their own direction. Poppea is no exception and has been performed in Norway to great acclaim.
