history

The founder of Moderna Dansteatern, choreographer and dancer Margaretha Åsberg, first came across the Torpedo hall in 1979. She was then offered to use the house as a rehearsal space when she was working on Pyramiderna, a minimalist cornerstone in Swedish modern choreography, but in the current state of the building, that was impossible. A spark was ignited, though, for seven years of struggle to transform the beautiful space into a functioning dance venue.

Moderna Dansteatern was the first "free" (non institutional) dance venue in all of the Nordic countries and has played a major role in the development of Swedish modern dance. Choreographers like Per Jonsson, Kenneth Kvarnström, Philippe Blanchard, Birgitta Egerbladh, Cristina Caprioli, Virpi Pahkinen and many more, have all made their first attempts on the floorboards of Moderna Dansteatern.
